Ecstatic Soccer Fans Just Triggered An 'Earthquake' During Peru's World Cup Celebrations

This article is more than 6 years old.

The recent win, sending Peru to its first World Cup since 1982 sparked such an intense and sudden celebration that it triggered earthquake warning systems in the capital.

The "earthquake" was triggered at 27 minutes into the match when Peru's Jefferson Farfan scored an impressive goal to send Peru up 1-0 against New Zealand. Qualifying for the World Cup is a cherished moment in many soccer fans lives and that was evident in the resulting celebration after Farfan's goal.

Christian Cueva's beautiful assist to Farfan set him up for a straight on shot near the penalty spot. As Farfan hits his mark, you can hear the stadium erupting in celebrations (goal is at 1:58 in the video below).

These celebrations were enough to suddenly trigger several earthquake detection systems in Lima, the capital city of Peru. While Peruvians are used to small tremors in this seismically active region of the world, I doubt many have ever experienced a human-induced tremor.

As Farfan scored the decisive goal, residents across the city of Lima and in the stadium at once celebrated by jumping up and down. This produced enough of a seismic wave to be registered as a 1.0M earthquake in the city by the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

In fact, the initial wave that shook the ground was measured across the city as residents everywhere jumped at once. Following that, there were secondary waves caused by the continued celebrations within Lima's National Stadium. The celebrations from residents of Lima triggered the Sismo Detector app, an early warning earthquake app, to send out alerts to residents of Lima.

After realizing the origin of the earthquake Sismologia Chile sent out the above tweet, which translates to: "INCREDIBLE | Earthquake Detector alarm would be activated in the District of Lima due to the celebration of the goal from Peru to New Zealand."

As Peru secured its place in Russia this summer for the World Cup, it also secured the badge of one of the most raucous fans in the world.
