Inmate who escaped Franklin Co. jail in custody: Sheriff's Office

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WSET) -- The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Rocky Mount Police Department have located an inmate who escaped the Franklin County Jail.

Police located Curtis Eugene Sparks on Power Dam Road in Rocky Mount just after 6 P.M. in Rocky Mount. He is in custody and will have an escape charge added to his sentencing.

According to reports, a group of trustee inmates was attending a program at a complex owned by the sheriff's office.

At the end of the program, the group was returning to the jail facility when 35-year-old inmate Curtis Eugene Sparks fled the group on foot.

There have been confirmed sightings of Sparks in the area of Power Dam Road and Scenic River Drive in Franklin County, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Marshals, the Virginia State Police and Franklin County Public Safety are currently searching this area.

Law enforcement is asking the public to keep an eye out for anyone who may match Sparks' description, especially in the area of 220 between Rocky Mount and Henry County.

Sparks is serving a sentence as a non-violent offender and is known to frequent Henry County and Botetourt County.

He is described as a white male, approximately six feet tall, weighing 170 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue pants.

Sparks also has tattoos on both arms and on his neck.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has described this situation as an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Sparks is being asked to immediately contact local law enforcement or the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at (540) 483-3000.
