Everton Loan Recap: October Report

After seeing 14 players head out on loan last season and 21 players go the season before, Everton have seen just six players leave on loan so far this season – which must be a big regret for Marcel Brands, with the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Muhamed Besic and Matthew Pennington now picking up a wage with no prospect of a game. There are also several players in their 20’s now also clogging up the under-23s after failing to secure a loan move way during the window.

But how did the six loanees get on in October? Let’s find out…

Moise Kean – PSG

After struggling to make an impact at Everton, Moise Kean is now playing alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Football really is a funny old game.

Anyway, after joining on a season-long loan, Kean has got off to a flying start in France, bagging four goals in his opening five appearances.

Promisingly, he’s started all three of the league games he’s been available for (although he was hooked at half-time at the weekend), as well as starting (and scoring a brace) in his second Champions League game, after coming off the bench against Manchester United.

One would hope that PSG don’t have an option to buy on the 20-year-old, otherwise Everton will face the prospect of letting a promising player go for less than his value (assuming he has a good season) or be stuck with him again if the season doesn’t pan out for him.

But… so far so good for Moise in Paris.

Nathan Markelo – Twente

Not a good month for Nathan Markelo in Holland unfortunately. After only picking up a few minutes from the bench in September, he was left on the bench for a couple of games before picking up an MCL injury in his knee which has kept him out of action in October and will likely keep him out for November too.

Dennis Adeniran – Wycombe Wanderers

Despite joining inevitable Championship strugglers, Wycombe, the Everton under-23s veteran seems to be gaining some valuable experience at Adams Park.

The 21-year-old has started every game since joining the club, making seven appearances and completing five of those games – primarily in his preferred central midfielder position.

Fortunes seem to be turning a bit for Wycombe, too. After losing their opening five games, they picked up an impressive 1-1 draw against Watford FC in midweek before beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at the weekend.

Lewis Gibson – Reading

After a highly impressive loan spell at Fleetwood in the second half of last season, Lewis Gibson has now been tasked with making a mark in the Championship.

The good news is that Reading are top of the Championship after winning seven of their opening nine games.

However, this good form has meant that Gibson has yet to play a single minute for the Royals, with Liam Moore and Michael Morrison having provided a solid central defensive partnership.

Moore was taken off injured in their 3-2 defeat at Coventry at the weekend, but unfortunately was replaced by another centre-half instead of Gibson, who has sat on the bench for each game so far.

It looks as though Gibson will have to continue to be patient and make sure he is ready to impress when an opportunity finally comes his way.

Callum Connolly – Fleetwood Town

Connolly, now 23, returned to Fleetwood once more on deadline day. Since then, he’s play the full 90 (at centre-back) of the following three games, although was missing for their game at the weekend.

His Everton contract expires next summer.

Theo Walcott – Southampton

Returned to Southampton on deadline day and provided an assist on his debut as they picked up an impressive 3-3 draw at Chelsea, and played the full 90 once again in another goal fest (a 4-3 win) against Aston Villa at the weekend.

His Everton contract also expires next summer.
