A season-opening win always feels pretty good.
Hanging on to win an opener at the buzzer in a season that was long delayed and never promised, well, Sam Sherry couldn’t hide the excitement in his voice after Cumberland Valley’s 46-43 road win over Governor Mifflin Saturday.

“It just feels great,” the 6-foot-9 Elon signee said. “Everyone was waiting for this day. We’ve been practicing super-hard, even though we didn’t get a lot of time to practice, and we went out there and fought-hard, and I think we played well.”
Sherry played particularly well, throwing in a game-high 13 points. But, despite his leading the way, this one came down to the final play, a turn and toss from the corner that sailed wide for Mifflin.
“One of the things that we said after the game was, ‘This wasn’t easy, but absolutely nothing about this year has been easy so you wouldn’t expect it any other way,’” Cumberland Valley coach David Vespignani said. “There was good and bad, but that is sort of to be expected. We are five practices in, and we haven’t really had the chance to get into any sort of flow or rhythm. So, there was good stuff and bad stuff, but we are 1-0.”
The Eagles scrapped back from a 22-19 halftime deficit.
Ben Drury added 10 points for the Eagles, Max Krevsky had 8 and Kuffa Kuffa had 5.
Greg Suber led Mifflin (0-1) with 10 points, Matt Gehris 9, Evan Lehman 8 and Matt Harley 6.
“It was different,” Krevsky said. “But it’s the same stuff we were doing in the preseason. During that three-week break, we all kept working hard, and made sure we personally stuck with it. The first week of practice went well, and, today, I think it showed. We went out and fought and we won the game.”
