The Department of the Treasury and the Small Business Administration released the PPP loan data Monday.

The Department of the Treasury and the Small Business Administration (SBA) released data Monday related to loans administered through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Established through the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, PPP loans are "designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on the payroll." Additionally, the SBA states that it will forgive loans "if all employee retention criteria are met, and the funds are used for eligible expenses."

The small business loan program was rolled out to great demand but soon ran out of funding by mid-April until President Donald Trump signed an interim $484 billion stimulus package on April 24 which included $310 billion for the program. Starting Monday morning, the PPP began accepting applications again, with a new deadline set for August 8.

Provider organizations have been examining their options to financially solvent during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak and some had requested clarification from the SBA about if they were eligible to apply for a loan through the program. In early May, the agency stated that nonprofit hospitals meet the federal tax code's Section 115 definition of a "nonprofit organization" under Section 1102 of the CARES Act.
