Ben Godfrey has praised “outstanding” Everton 21-year-old

Everton defender Ben Godfrey has given huge praise to teammate Joao Virginia.

Virginia, 21, is a young goalkeeper that has earned some first-team minutes recently due to injuries to both Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen.

The Portuguese youngster started the weekend’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, but came out of it with his reputation enhanced despite a 2-0 loss.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t do much about either goal he conceded.

But the Portuguese shot-stopper made a couple of brilliant eye-catching saves, including one from Raheem Sterling in the second half.

Godfrey has given a glowing verdict on Everton’s Virginia, who he’s shared is always impressing in training.

“I was massively impressed by his performance,” Godfrey said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“He works hard every day in training. Some of the saves he made to keep us in the game [against Man City] were outstanding.

“I’m over the moon for him and, as long as he keeps working hard and trying to improve, then there will be plenty more appearances to come.”

TBR’s View:

Everton’s goalkeeper position is certainly an interesting one, as manager Carlo Ancelotti has rotated at times despite saying on record that Pickford is his number one.

Sweden internatonal Olsen is a great back-up option to have, but he’s only on loan for the rest of the season at Goodison Park from Roma.

It seems like the Merseyside outfit may not need to go into the market to sign a second-choice goalkeeper.

Promising talent Virginia has looked a steady presence in Everton’s net, albeit he’s not had much senior exposure, but promoting him to Pickford’s understudy could be a natural move.
