Lareka unveils personalised chocolate concept for premium confectionery market

Netherlands-based Lareka Confectionery Equipment has claimed a key breakthrough for the sector with its personalised chocolate concept, offering an end-to-end production solution.

As the business explained to Confectionery Production, its newly unveiled system allows businesses to offer low-volume luxury customisable finished products in the form of puzzles, single items or a series of confectionery bars.

The firm’s concept contains a web-based application, high-quality industrial printer, precision cutter and utilises the company’s established BTB25 wrapping machine, with the entire process, from uploading a design online to the wrapping of tablets, is completed within three minutes.

Customisable packaging in small series allows businesses to make optimal use of the added value of this packaging trend. Besides the promotional opportunities it creates, such bespoke chocolate packaging turns a regular chocolate tablet in an exclusive treat, personal gift, or memorable souvenir.

As the company noted, the combination of positive customer experience and a unique end product is what makes consumers, GEN-Z in particular, willing to pay a higher price for ‘the same product’.

However, the business continued, the issue with offering customisable chocolate packaging is that it requires equipment and services from different fields of industry: web and application development, digital printing, chocolate and manufacturing. Another factor, said the business, is that chocolate companies that do offer customisable chocolate packaging often use third parties. Lareka’s personalised chocolate concept addresses this by bundling the required equipment and services together, resulting in an end-to-end solution for customisable chocolate packaging.

Furthermore, Lareka acknowledged that the economic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak will be felt in most industries, including the chocolate industry. Since being impacted by the decreasing consumption of chocolate is likely, it believed that making an investment in innovative machinery improves a business’ competitive edge for when the economy recovers and chocolate consumption is anticipated to correspondingly increase. The company added that the use of such a complete solution offered relatively short payback times, owing to the higher retail prices commanded by distinctive, customised products.

“We have noticed global shifts in consumer behaviour and preferences. Gen-Z is looking for customisable high-quality products and is willing to pay a premium price for it. The way our team has transferred this trend into a highly profitable customisable chocolate concept makes me incredibly proud,” said Henk Somers, CEO of Lareka Confectionery Equipment. From custom design to wrapped chocolate tablet in just three minutes at a batch size of one – our concept demonstrates lean production at its finest.”
