Area bank woos high-ranking loan officer from competitor for new post

James Coalwell has worked with Southwest Florida banks for 15 years.

PUNTA GORDA — The former chief credit officer of Calusa Bank in Charlotte County, James Coalwell, has joined Charlotte State Bank & Trust as vice president of commercial lending.

Coalwell mostly recently was vice president of commercial loans for Centennial Bank in Charlotte County, according to his LinkedIn page. Before that he was senior vice president  and chief credit officer of Calusa Bank from 2007 to 2015, before Acheiva Credit Union acquired it.  

A resident of Punta Gorda, Coalwell has worked in lending in the Lee County area and his native Minnesota as well, according to a statement. “We’re excited to have James join our lending team,” Charlotte State Bank & Trust Senior Credit Officer Maryann Mize says in the statement. “He possesses considerable skill and experience and also has a strong commitment to our community.”

Coalwell is on the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board and a board member on the Charlotte County Industrial Development Authority. He also is a board member and former two-term president of the Charlotte County Economic Development Partnership.

Port Charlotte-based Charlotte State Bank & Trust, founded in 1987 posted $22 million in revenue in 2019.
