With the latest news that Nintendo and Netflix had plans for a live-action series based on The Legend of Zelda, it might be easy to forget or rather be completely unknown to younger fans that there was a Legend of Zelda cartoon back in 1989.
Of course, the '80s and '90s were radically different times, when Nintendo was much more open to lending out their intellectual properties. Hence, it’s not surprising that there was also a Super Mario Bros. show to go along with Link’s animated adventures. It's impossible to tell which one got better treatment between Link and Mario as both of these and the disastrous Super Mario Bros. movie were relegated as forgettable attempts by Nintendo to cash in on their prized mascots, and it’s taken the company a few decades to get over such failures.
Despite all that, the internet never forgets and recently a YouTuber by the name of KhalidSMShahin decided to mash up The Legend of Zelda cartoon's dialogue with another relic from the 90s, Beavis and Butt-Head. MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head was an outlandish satiric way to express social commentary through the eyes of two dimwitted friends, whose main interests were MTV music videos and pursuing “hot chicks” to no avail. Watch on to see Beavis masterfully take on the role of the blonde hero of time and wait until the end for a surprise.
The Legend of Beavis features not only incredibly well-synched dialogue, but also some familiar melodies and sound effects from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, and other games, with Butt-Head assuming the role of the series’ King Harkininan, Zelda’s father. Somehow, retaining Ganon, the Moblins and Zelda’s dialogue works incredibly well; at the same time, Beavis’ giggles and noises are perfectly suited to replace Link’s own familiar collection of grunts.
KhalidSMShahin claims it took him forever to find the right lines for his video with a special thanks to his sister for lip-syncing and blending the two videos together for the whole thing. Aside from being completely hilarious, this fan-made creation is a perfect reminder of just how many video game-related shows there were back then, as even Capcom took a swing at these kinds of productions with Mega Man and Street Fighter, the latter even getting an even more forgettable movie.
In recent times, video game companies have gotten more skillful at branching out their properties, with Nintendo being a prime example of this with its gorgeous new Super Nintendo World theme park and an upcoming Super Mario movie, as well as other mysterious projects down the line. No matter how these turn out, it’s hard to imagine a future lip-synch of Detective Pikachu paired with Rick and Morty.
