Exclusive: Sunderland prospect Mitch Curry set for exciting move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami

Sunderland Under-23’s forward Mitchell Curry to set to leave the club to join David Beckham’s MLS franchise club Inter Miami CF.

The 21-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, is joining Phil Neville’s side ahead of the new 2021 MLS season, which begins in mid-April.

The move is set to be announced pending that the player is granted a Visa to play in the United States.

Sunderland will not receive a fee for Curry, but they do have a 15% sell-on clause within the deal for any future transfer.

Curry has been in contact with his new manager via Zoom and has not featured for Sunderland since December.

He will join former Sunderland winger Lewis Morgan in America, as well as ex-Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín and former Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

The striker will become the second Englishman in the squad, joining former Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross who signed in late February.

Curry joined the Black Cats in the summer from local rivals Middlesbrough, scoring seven goals in 10 reserve appearances.

This included a run of scoring in four consecutive reserve matches against Wolves, Crystal Palace, West Brom, and Norwich, two of which he scored braces against.

The ex-Boro forward’s excellent form led to a first-team call-up, he was an unused substitute against Fleetwood in the EFL Trophy, before making his full-debut off the bench against Wimbledon in December.

Across his time playing in England, Curry made first-team appearances during loan spells with Harrogate, Inverness, and Gateshead, but he failed to obtain consistent first-team football with both Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Curry’s departure leaves Sunderland Under-23’s manager with just two strikers, in Swedish Under-21 international Benji Kimpioka and 20-year-old Will Harris, who is yet to score since joining from Burnley last summer.
