After Liverpool clinched its first Premier League title, and first league title in 30 years, fans of the Reds unsurprisingly took to the streets of the Merseyside city to celebrate their club’s achievement. As a result of those celebrations, however, the club has condemned the actions of many fans, which included breaking social distancing and mask guidelines and also setting fire to the Royal Liver Building, which is owned by rival side Everton.
In the statement — put out by the club in conjunction with the Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council, and Spirit of Shankly — Liverpool urged fans to have patience, for there will be a parade to celebrate once it is safe to do so:
The potential danger of a second peak of COVID-19 still exists and we need to work together to make sure we don’t undo everything that has been achieved as a region during lockdown. When it is safe to do so, we will all work together to arrange a victory parade when everyone can come together to celebrate. Until that time, the safety of our city and our people continues to be our number one priority.
