Since the year began, the police and the courts have dealt with lots of men who targeted women and ended up paying for their crimes.

Here are some of the offences that were reported by LeicestershireLive over the past 12 monrths:

Virgil Arhip

A frail pensioner living in Leicester's Saffron Lane area suffered multiple injuries after being pinned down by her throat, struck, slapped and bitten on her face, neck and chest and raped by 28-year-old Virgil Arhip.

The offender, who climbed into the woman's bedroom window on July 19, was jailed for 12 years on December 4.

Paul Saunders

Paul Saunders

The violent drunk abused two women he met through online dating sites and forced one of them to beg him not to leave on her hands and knees.

Paul Saunders, 40, who lives near Ashby, called the young woman “the biggest woman I’ve been with” to her face before making her plead with him. After she did that, he made her drive him to the shops to buy alcohol and then attacked her during a violent rage in her car.

He was later jailed for 28 months.

Gary Lees

Gary Lees

Gary Lees, 48, of Hugglescote, carried out a sustained and brutal attack on his partner - the second such assault in less than five years.

It happened in September after she confronted him with what she believed to be evidence he was seeing someone behind her back.

He punched and kicked her, leaving her with a fractured arm and leg as well as extensive bruising. He was jailed for three years.

Deano Churchill-Richards was convicted of two counts of rape against a 13-year-old girl he met in a park in April.

The 40-year-old, of Wreford Crescent, in Thurnby Lodge, Leicester, took the girl to his home by taxi. He plied her with alcohol and gave her a 'psychoactive' drug before raping her.

He later tried to stop her from leaving his flat but she managed to escape and he was later arrested.

Hafiz Sharifi

A 29-year-old man has today (Friday 24 January) admitted killing Suvekshya Burathoki at her Leicester home.
Suvekshya, known as Fatima, was stabbed multiple times at her address in Bartholomew Street on Tuesday 8 October last year.
Hafiz Sharifi, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to murdering Fatima at Leicester Crown Court.
Hafiz Sharifi

Murderer Hafiz Sharifi attacked his ex-wife Suvekshya Burathoki with a bread knife, killing her. She suffered at least six separate wounds from a 10-inch knife, including a forceful fatal blow to her heart.

The 32-year-old mother of three, also known by friends as 'Fatima', bled to death in the kitchen of her home in Bartholomew Street, Highfields, Leicester.

Earlier this year Sharifi, 30, of no fixed address, was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years behind bars.

Dirson Santana

Dirson Christopher Jimenez Santana

Dirson Santana targeted lone young women in Leicester city centre and carried out a string of sex attacks.

The 29-year-old predator, of Nugent Street, off Tudor Road, Leicester, later pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault, and one charge of assault.

In one incident he pushed a young woman into the River Soar after approaching her on the canal towpath.

Keiran Allen

Keiran Allen was jailed for four years and three months for making threats to kill and breaching a restraining order


Keiran Allen was jailed after bombarding his ex-girlfriend with vile threats, including that he would murder her and throw acid on her and her three-year-old child.

Allen, 29, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment after pleading guilty to one count of making threats to kill, and a further five charges of breaching a restraining order.

Allen visited the home of the woman and demanded that she gave him £30 or he would damage her car.

Kwame Eghan

Kwame Eghan was jailed for two years and eight months for attacking his ex-partner and her friend with pepper spray outside a take-away in the city centre

Two sisters were attacked in Leicester city centre with pepper spray after a row about social media posts.

The attack, in March this year, was carried out by one of the women's ex-boyfriend, Kwame Eghan, who was later jailed for two years and eight months for the crime.

The 31-year-old, of Ipswich Close, Beaumont Leys, also pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order, and possessing the CS canister - classed as a firearm - when prohibited.

Shaun Woods

Man sentenced for Skegness assault
Shaun Michael Woods, aged 41, from Leicester, appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on 23 June where he was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a woman. He had pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm. The assault took place in Skegness in August 2019 and left the victim with numerous injuries, requiring hospital treatment.
Shaun Michael Woods

Shaun Michael Woods, of Baysdale Road, off Walnut Street, was jailed for three years after attacking a woman as she lay in bed at a Skegness holiday camp.

The 41-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of actual bodily harm in relation to his assault on the victim.

The attack took place in the seaside resort in August 2019 and left the woman with numerous injuries which required hospital treatment.

Robert Preece-Smith

Robert Preece-Smith

Robert Preece-Smith attacked his ex-girlfriend and her sister, when she suspected him of cheating on her.

Preece-Smith, of London Road, Leicester, was rowing with his ex over the allegations of cheating, and lead to the woman calling her sister.

The sister arrived at a property in Derby and 32-year-old Preece-Smith attacked them both. He also later sent his ex a threatening message.

He was jailed this year for a year and six weeks.

Shane Astill poured bleach over a woman's head in the street leaving her screaming in terror and fearing she would be blinded or killed.

The victim - who had given the police information about Astill's relative - was on the phone to the police, having dialled 999 to report a man following her near her home in Beaumont Leys.

Leicester Crown Court was told she heard 33-year-old Astill's footsteps running up behind her with increasing speed.

Astill was jailed for three years and four months.

Leroy James

Leroy James


Violent bully Leroy James was jailed for an attack on his former partner at a flat in Leicester.

Leroy James was sentenced to 33 months in prison and handed a four-year restraining order, forbidding him to contact his victim, by a judge at Leicester Crown Court.

The 37-year-old, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm to the woman.

The woman was found with facial injuries staggering along the street on February 21 after the attack.

Jason Murty

Rapist Jason Murty, from Melton, subjected his victim to a terrifying 11-hour ordeal inside her home on February 20.

The 41-year-old "kicked, punched and spat at" the woman during the attack. He also threatened her with a drill bit, before wrapping his hands around her neck in an attempt to choke her.

Murty, who had been out drinking earlier that evening, eventually passed out, giving the woman an opportunity to call for help.

He was jailed for 12 years.

Jigukumar Sorthi

Killer Jigukumar Sorthi was captured on CCTV fleeing after fatally stabbing 21-year-old Bhavini Pravin to death at her family home.

Having committed the horrific murder in front of the victim's mother, the factory worker dropped his knife outside the flat and ran from Moores Road, Belgrave, where the Pravin family lived, on the afternoon of Monday, March 2.

He was convicted of her murder by a jury and the 24-year-old will have to serve a minimum term of 28 year behind bars.

Tony Fraine

Married school teacher Tony Fraine abused a 17-year-old girl after they exchanged sexual images and explicit messages.

Fraine groomed the victim and manipulated her into an inappropriate relationship, which resulted in him being sacked from his teaching post at Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Six Form College, in Hinckley.

Fraine, of Rayleigh Green, Scraptoft, abused the girl over 10 days in 2019 and later admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child when in a position of trust.

Fraine, whose wife left him, was jailed for two years.

Wayne Haywood

Wayne Haywood, 48, sexually assaulted a girl when she was just 15.

Haywood, of Lime Avenue, Groby, was convicted of three counts of sexual assault and two counts of assault by penetration following a trial at Leicester Crown Court.

The victim told detectives that Haywood had repeatedly touched her inappropriately at an address in Coalville and also kissed her on a number of occasions and that Haywood had ignored her pleas to stop.

Haywood denied doing anything wrong and the girl was forced to give evidence to a jury about what had happened.

He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

Leon Pick

Leon Pick, a violent thug with a history of attacking women was described in court as posing a "high risk" of harming females.

Pick, 36, of Letchworth Road, New Parks, Leicester, repeatedly attacked one girlfriend, knocking her to the ground with one blow during a row at Leicester Market.

In another incident, he also punched another woman to the ground within moments of being introduced.

The defendant, who has 120 offences to his name, including domestic violence offences, was jailed for two years and 28 days.
