CLARENCE - North Cedar opened the girls' basketball season with a target on its back.
The Knights returned six players from last year's 9-14 season - seniors Darby Hawtrey, Lexus Crist, Leah Crock, Tessa Fields and Grace Proesch, and junior Nicole Sander. Other juniors are Kayla Sander and Katie Thompson, who took last year off. One sophomore, Kayla Syring will complete the season's eight varsity players.
The Knights have high goals for the 2017-18 basketball season.
Head coach Glen Hay and assistant Victor Curley are back for another season.
As Katherine Paterson once said ' A dream without a plan is just a wish.” The Knights have a plan and are not backing down.
'We are determined and focused because we have been playing together since fifth grade and we are really clicking now,” Proesch said.
With the right mind-set to accomplish anything in the game, the Knights have the right goals and potential to go anywhere.
'With all the hard work we have done in the weight room, strength and conditioning, and just playing the game of basketball shows how ready we are,” Hawtrey said.
North Cedar spent the summer and fall determined to make this season much better than the last one, and are about to find out where they stand. They all work really hard in practice, all are very coachable. It's fun to watch everyone improve so much.
All also have great attitudes, but most importantly they work as a team.
'If we are wearing purple throw the ball to someone wearing purple,” Hay said.
The Knights still are developing and finding their true identity. They lost to Class 3A seventh rated Camanche, 57-37. They fell to 2A 11th-ranked Cascade, 47-33, on Tuesday.
The Knights hope to use their maturity and experience to outplay the rest of their opponents. These girls love to play basketball and their dedication and the Knight Dungeon's support should make for an amazing season.
