A 14-year-old girl is accused of stabbing her older wheelchair-bound sister to death at their Pennsylvania home while their parents slept.

Claire Miller allegedly knifed 19-year-old Helen in the early hours of Monday.

Police say she then called 911 shortly after 1am in a 'hysterical' state, allegedly telling law enforcement she had killed her sibling.

They say they then found the teen outside the family home in Manheim Township, covered in blood and trying to wash her hands in the snow.

Officers say Claire pointed them to Helen's bedroom where her sister was then discovered with a pillow covering her face and a knife wound to her neck.

According to the criminal complaint, Miller repeatedly said: 'I stabbed my sister.'

The circumstances of the stabbing are not known.

Miller, of Manheim Township, has been charged with criminal homicide as an adult, the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office said.

She is being held without bail. Footage shows the teen being led in handcuffs from court after being arraigned to Lancaster County Prison.

District Attorney Heather Adams told Fox43: 'This certainly is an incredibly tragic and unusual case. Our sympathies are with this family as they try to cope with the impact of this crime. Investigators will continue to process and analyze evidence to determine the circumstances that led to the victim’s death.'

Manheim Township Police Chief Tom Rudzinski told ABC27: 'I don't know that I have ever been a part of something that is quite as sad as this.

'When I heard about this I was almost instantly upset about it myself over the details that had been related to me.

'The investigators are going to be asking those types of questions, conducting those interviews of everybody that was involved, and trying to determine a timeline exactly what that would have lead to this awful event.'

The head of Lancaster Country Day School - where Claire attended as a ninth-grade student - issued a statement on the matter.

Steve Lisk said: 'We are surprised by the news of this incident and we’re grieving ourselves even as we look to support the family and ensure support for all our students and families within our tight-knit school community.'

Claire will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing Friday.
