Too cold for ice cream? Small town shop opens for season in February in Michigan

FRUITPORT, MI – Too cold for ice cream in February? Apparently not for Michiganders in Muskegon County.

With piles of dirty snow nearby, customers lined up outside Norm’s Ice Cream, 350 N. 3rd Ave., in Fruitport, on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

“It’s like a sign of spring when we open,” said Jezzie Breitwisch, who has been the shop’s manager for 14 years.

The shop opened for the season Wednesday offering items at half price from noon until 10 p.m. The temperatures were in the 30s much of the day.

Breitwisch said they had more than 200 orders in the first three hours of business.

“Make sure you’re hungry,” said Tom Owen, a Fruitport resident who said the shop serves generous portions. “I suggest getting it in a bowl because (the ice cream cones) are so huge.”

Donna Collins, who drove from Muskegon to get ice cream, was also impressed with size of her banana split.

“This is huge!” Collins told MLive.

Fruitport Township Treasurer Rose Dillon said she was picking up ice cream to treat the township’s office staff.

“It’s our afternoon delight,” Dillon said with a smile. “When we heard they were open we were so excited about getting our first ice cream of the year. We’re delighted to be getting our ice cream from Norm’s.”
