Deer hunting season is underway in Michigan.

Archery season will soon give way to the state’s regular firearm season on Sunday, Nov. 15, so hunters will still need to be prepared to clean and harvest their deer.

The Michigan DNR recently offered up several tips to help hunters prepare for the aftermath of a successful hunt

“Whether this year is your first season deer hunting or your 41st, it’s important to have a plan for processing your deer if you have luck in the field this fall,” a news release reads. “Whether you have a professional processor do the work or choose to process your deer yourself, preparation is the key to keep meat fresh and tasty.”

Hunters looking for a good overview can start by watching this DNR video walking you through quartering a deer.

Other DNR recommended videos on YouTube show hunters how to get precise cuts of meat from the deer’s shoulder and hindquarters.

The DNR also provides a complete list of professional wild game processors in Michigan.

The DNR is also reminding hunters that health and safety is very important while processing a deer. Hunters should wear latex or rubber gloves while handling deer and clean knives and other tools in a solution of 50% bleach, 50% water when finished.

Finally, hunters should take care when cutting near the brain or spinal cord. Hunters who see anything worrisome like nodules or abscesses should contact the DNR Wildlife Disease Lab by filling out this form.

Good luck!
