MANISTEE COUNTY, MI – Michigan State Police say a hunter died shortly after he shot a doe in Manistee County.

A DNR conservation officer said Gregg Salisbury, 61, of Portage was found dead near his friend’s home in Onekama Township at 10 p.m. on Monday. He had been reported missing at approximately 8 p.m.

Michigan State Police, DNR officers and other rescue personnel began a search of the area shortly after Salisbury was reported missing. Police say it appears he had killed a doe and while walking to recover the animal, he died.

There are no indications of foul play at the scene, police said. Family and friends indicate Salisbury had an extensive history of medical issues, which are believed to be a factor in his death.

The Michigan State Police was also assisted by Onekama Fire and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.
