Netflix movie filming in Boston: Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep and others starring in ‘Don’t Look Up'

Imagine walking out of your front door and seeing Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan and Cate Blanchett filming a movie.

If you live in Boston, come November, it could happen.

The Netflix original movie “Don’t Look Up” from director Adam McKay is set to begin filming in Boston on November 19.

Joining the already star-studded cast is Himesh Patel, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley.

According to IMDb, the movie is a comedy about a pair of astronomers, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who try to warn everyone on Earth that a giant meteorite will destroy the planet in six months.

The movie was supposed to begin filming in April, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed production, IndieWire reported.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, McKay commented that he’s noticed parallels between actual events unfolding in regards to the current coronavirus pandemic, and the fictional comedic plot of his upcoming film.

“The whole idea is that the President doesn’t really understand the science and kind of soft-sells it and the urgency is kind of lost," McKay stated about his film. “And so these two scientists have to go on a media tour and kind of get caught up in the social media vortex and TV shows, and they’re just trying to say that, ‘Hey, we’re all gonna die.’ While we’re scouting that movie, this is all going on with the coronavirus. And we’re seeing clips of Trump saying, ‘It’s nothing.' And we’re seeing the right-wing media say, ‘It’s a hoax'.”

Boston residents have a chance to participate in the filming of the movie as well as the casting director, Judith Bouley, put out a call for extras in September, stating, “We need people of all ages, sizes, and ethnicities to potentially work as paid background actors.”

“Instead of having an open casting call, like we did last summer at Marblehead High School, this time I’m going to interview by Zoom,” Bouley told CBS Boston.

Families, couples or home units can apply together. On those applications, it just asks for “a group photograph on each application in addition to your individual photographs.”
