Southwick home destroyed by fire; two residents displaced

SOUTHWICK - A home at 4 HIllcrest Road is considered a total loss following an early morning fire.

Two residents were displaced but no one was injured, said Fire Chief Russ Anderson.

The fire, reported at around 4:40 a.m., spread into the attic of the single-family ranch, and collapsed the roof.

Anderson said the fire was the second at the same address in less than 12 hours. Anderson said the second fire is considered a “rekindle” of the first, a term for where a fire re-ignites.

Firefighters were called there just after 5 p.m. Sunday for a gas grill fire that spread to the siding and into the attic. Strong winds and dry conditions were contributing factors in the fire spreading, Anderson said. Damage was estimated at $100,000.

Firefighter extinguished the first fire, and went through the building looking for any lingering hot spots, he said. The fire was considered out, and firefighters left the scene a little after 8 p.m., he said.

The residents were allowed back inside, and had called a contractor to come and board up some broken windows, Anderson said.

When called back to the same address hours later, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flame.

Westfield and Agawam assisted with mutual aid during the two fires.

The home, according to town records is owned by Cortland and Colleen Dell, and has a total assessed value of $170,000.
