Add Oakridge Public Schools to the list of schools in the Muskegon area and nationwide that have jumped on board the #BeTheLight movement.
The lights above Oakridge’s football facility, Russell A. Erickson Stadium, will flip on at 8:20 p.m. Friday, April 24, and shine for 20 minutes to reflect upon the positive memories created by the Class of 2020. In military time, 8:20 p.m. is 2020.
When the remainder of the 2019-20 school year was canceled because of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, seniors lost out on some key moments. The #BeTheLight movement started to honor the 2020 seniors.
Other Muskegon-area schools have gotten in on the act. Muskegon started it a couple weeks ago, followed last Friday by Fruitport, Mason County Central, Montague and North Muskegon, to name a handful of others. On Monday, Grand Haven joined the movement. This Friday, Mona Shores and Muskegon Catholic Central are getting on board.
On the Oakridge Public Schools Facebook page, a message was posted about Friday’s #BeTheLight ceremony. It read, “This is simply to honor our upcoming graduates and is in addition to any forthcoming graduation ceremony or official send-off.”
The Oakridge #BeTheLight ceremony will be carried on Facebook Live by the school. The district also asks that if you stop by the stadium or school, then you must remain in your vehicle.
A couple weeks ago, Oakridge put out a video narrated by superintendent Tom Livezey. The video expressed how much the students are missed and to “Be Strong! Finish Strong!” in the face of the pandemic. The video can be seen here:
