BAY CITY, MI - With spring in the air, the city of Bay City is reminding residents and businesses to gear up for yard maintenance.

The city released a statement on social media and in the city-wide newsletter encouraging residents to prepare and follow the regulations in regard to an ordinance on grass length and noxious weeds.

“We understand that these are challenging times, however, we are asking that all residential and commercial property owners do their part to keep their yards maintained,” reads the social media statement.

Per the ordinance, residential properties are required to have grass trimmed to 6 inches or less while commercial properties and vacant land are allowed to grow up to 8 inches in height. Grass regulations go into effect on May 1 and run through Oct. 31.

As for weeds, property owners are required to cut all noxious weeds or remove them before May 1 and weeds are also subject to the same 6-inch rule on residential property and 8 inches on commercial and vacant properties.

Failure to comply with the city’s yard maintenance ordinance can result in the city performing clean up and cutting duties and presenting the owner a bill for services.

Those with questions are asked to contact the Code Enforcement Office at City Hall at (989) 894-8176 or by email at scoggin@baycitymi.org.

For reference, the official wording of the ordinance Section 110-27 is as follows:

“It shall be the duty of each owner, possessor or occupier of land, and of every person having charge of any land within the city, to cut or remove and destroy all noxious weeds. Noxious weeds shall be defined as all grasses, annual plants, and vegetation other than trees or shrubs; provided, however, this term shall not include cultivated flowers and gardens."

"All noxious weeds shall be cut or removed and destroyed on or before May 1 of each year. Thereafter, all noxious weeds shall be cut or removed and destroyed before they reach a height of six (6”) inches on lands adjacent to a residence or a height of eight inches on vacant lands or commercial property and, in any case, as necessary to prevent all noxious weeds from going to seed or otherwise spreading or becoming a detriment to the public health.”
