Ice fisherman captures rare video of wolves hunting down coyote: ‘Frightening, surreal’

HEYDEN, ONTARIO - Talk about a harrowing experience he says he will never forget. Ryan Thorburn captured this video showing two wolves hunting a coyote, all happening right in front of him.

Thorburn had just finished doing some ice fishing last Wednesday in Heyden, Ontario. That’s near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where Thorburn, an ER nurse, is from. He says he was packing up his gear when all of a sudden he saw the coyote running from two wolves in the distance and they were coming right at him.

“They ran right past me, the one right in front of me you see in the video, then the second wolf behind me,” Thorburn told MLive. “The one behind me stopped and stared at me. It did frighten me because I don’t trust wolves. This was definitely a surreal experience.”

Thorburn says he has never seen anything like this before and says what he saw was quite spectacular. He said he actually saved the coyote by scaring the wolves with his snowmobile.

“They did get the pounce on the coyote, however, my snowmobile did scare them. The wolves then went one way and the coyote went another.”

Thorburn says even though the coyote got away, it was injured, saying it limped away.
