GENESEE TWP, MI – An investigation continues into a home invasion Thursday morning that left a dog injured during an apparent break in related to marijuana at a Genesee Township home.
The incident began shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 when officers with the Genesee Township Police Department responded to the 4000 block of Alder Drive near Genesee Road following a report of a home invasion.
That’s where police said a dog was shot by a suspect attempting to steal marijuana plants.
Genesee Township Lt. Robert Watters said the dog and marijuana plants were both outside the home.
It’s unknown if the suspect and homeowner know each other.
The suspect had a firearm in their possession, Watters said.
The homeowners confronted the suspect with a pistol, firing two shots but not in the suspect’s direction.
The dog was taken by the homeowners to a local veterinary clinic for treatment of its injuries. No word was immediately available on the dog’s condition.
A perimeter was set up to search for the suspect with assistance from Genesee County Parks rangers and a track conducted by a Michigan State Police K-9 unit. Assistance was also provided by Genesee County Sheriff’s Office paramedics.
During the search for the suspect, a firearm was located and marijuana was recovered by police.
A 20-year-old Genesee Township man matching the description of the suspect was briefly detained by police, questioned, and later released.
The investigation is ongoing.
