The Purple Onion will be expanding beyond the Birmingham area into four new locations.

A popular Mediterranean-themed restaurant and deli is looking to expand beyond the Birmingham area.

The Purple Onion recently closed a deal to expand into four vacant restaurants in and around Birmingham. The deli and grill will be moving into former locations of Bojangles’ Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits. The franchise also plans on locations eventually in neighboring states.

The new locations will be on 1545 Montclair Road in Birmingham, 2207 Moody Parkway in Moody, 2581 Pelham Parkway in Pelham and 3318 Rainbow Drive in Rainbow City.

Lyndsy Yim, an associate broker with Retail Specialists, said the Montclair Road location will be the first to open, followed by Moody, Pelham and Rainbow City. The openings will take place through the fall and winter.

“They’re all similar sizes, ready to move in,” Yim said. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The Alabama-based company, established in 1991, has locations in Hoover, along U.S. 280, at 2296 Pelham Parkway and in Hueytown.

Yim said the former Bojangles’ locations suited the company’s need for drive thru windows.

“Even before COVID-19, that was something they were looking for,” she said. “It was something they had been wanting to do. Even though it’s a lifestyle change that people will probably be making after this, drive-thru still made sense.”
