2 corrections officers injured during inmate attack at U.P. prison

BARAGA, MI – Two corrections officers were injured in an attack by a maximum security prisoner at an Upper Peninsula facility on Wednesday, WLUC reports.

The attack occurred around noon on Feb. 10 at Baraga Correctional Facility, MDOC spokesperson Chris Gautz told the TV station. A maximum security prisoner used a weapon to attack a corrections officer from behind. The assault caused injuries to the officer’s neck. The injured officer was able to restrain the prisoner with the help of a second officer who was also injured during the incident.

Following the incident, prisoners were locked down and the injured officers to transported to a local hospital for treatment, the report said. Both officers were released from the hospital Wednesday evening.

The Michigan Department of Corrections and Michigan State Police are investigating this incident, the report said. The name of the suspect has not been released. Charges have not yet been filed. Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the weapon used in the attack.
