STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Islanders are waking to wild winds, temperatures that feel as though they are in the single digits and icy patches during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Gusts around 40 mph are blowing through our borough, keeping temperatures down in the 30s, according to AccuWeather.com.

Steady northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph could fuel gusts up to 50 mph in the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The MTA has set speed restrictions for all drivers and imposed a ban on empty tractor-trailer trucks and tandem trailers until 10 a.m. on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

All empty tractor-trailers, empty tandem trailers, motorcycles and house trailers are banned at the Bayonne Bridge where the speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph for all drivers, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

MTA S66 buses will not make stops in the Grymes Hill section in both directions because of icy road conditions. Stops will be made along Victory Boulevard between Highland Avenue and Clove Road, according to the MTA.

Cold, windy weather is likely to persist late into the afternoon and could affect the evening commute on Tuesday. Temperatures will top out only a few ticks above freezing at 36 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

High winds coupled with melting snow could uproot trees or send branches flying.

“Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle,” according to the National Weather Service. “Secure outdoor objects.”
