Jeff Driskel’s positive COVID-19 test has sidelined the entire Broncos quarterback room.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles have all been deemed close contacts and are ineligible to play against the Saints on Sunday afternoon. None of the quarterbacks were wearing masks when they came in contact with Driskel.
As of 6:45 Saturday night, the game was still on as scheduled. Schefter also reported the Broncos wouldn’t forfeit, so they’re going to have to get creative, but don’t expect 60-year-old John Elway to come down from the general manager’s booth.
Denver’s 9 News reports quality control coach Rob Calabrese ran the offense on Saturday afternoon after the quarterbacks were pulled off the practice field. The league has ruled that he can’t be signed though, per Mike Klis, so we won’t see any magic like the Toronto Maple Leafs being beaten by their own Zamboni driver back in February.
The Broncos could turn to running back Royce Freeman or practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton, who played some quarterback at Wake Forest from 2015-2019. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy also offered his services on Twitter. Either way, it sounds like it’ll be somebody that’s already on their roster.
