Light snow forecast this weekend in Massachusetts; Mostly rain expected Saturday and Sunday through Monday

Massachusetts may see some snowflakes along with multiple days of rainfall over the weekend, forecasters said.

Mainly rainfall is expected Saturday as a low-pressure system moves through southern New England. Snow is expected to start falling early in the day across much of Massachusetts before quickly transitioning to all rain, according to the National Weather Service.

The only exception is across higher terrains, where snow may mix with rain in the late morning or early afternoon, the weather service said.

Snow should start falling around 7 a.m. in Western Massachusetts and 8 to 9 a.m. in central and northern Worcester and Essex Counties, according to forecasters.

By the time the precipitation transitions to rain roughly 2 hours later, less than an inch of snow will have fallen throughout the state, though Southeastern Massachusetts can expect no accumulations. Pockets of an inch to 2 inches of snow are forecast near the border of Berkshire and Hampden counties and in northern Franklin and Worcester counties, the weather service said.

“Most areas will see little if any snowfall accumulation,” the agency noted. “The higher terrain could see an inch of accumulation and possibly 2 for northwestern MA before changing to rain.”

Drier weather will return Saturday night, but rainfall is expected again late Sunday into early Monday, especially toward the southern coast of the state. The best opportunity for precipitation is south of the Massachusetts Turnpike, according to officials.

A brief shot of cold air and windy weather is also expected late Monday through Tuesday, meteorologists said, a notable difference from the relatively mild and warm conditions Massachusetts has seen for much of this week.
