Outdoors Angle: Making The Hard House Transition

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

This is so cool! I am finally making the plunge into the world of "hard houses" and am forsaking (for the time being) the portables and getting into the more comfortable and efficient permanents.

I have had great success with portable, flip-over portables over the decades and there are times when the wind and cold makes a portable not much fun. The hard house allows me to fish in any weather and opens up much more fishing possibilities.

My goal was a house that was small and easy to pull with an ATV. Chances are I would be pulling it around alone and anything larger than 7 feet would be a chore. I also elected to go with a "skid" house versus a wheel house just because skid houses can go up and over snow drifts while wheel houses tend to get bogged down. A skid house can handle big snow falls because the long skies just glide over trouble.

There is no need to totally forsake the portables as you can use the hard house as a base camp and venture out with the flip-overs making you much more versatile.

It's funny, now my buddies all want to use the new skid house after I moved it on the lake and set it up....where were they when I needed help setting it on the lake? Funny how that works.

I am looking forward to this transition from portables to a more secure, comfortable permanent. We'll see how the season unfolds...in comfort!
