With Wednesday’s news that a third vaccine against COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has been shown to be both safe and effective, there’ll doubtless be more people asking that question. For good reason, too.

After all, it’s been just shy of a year since our nation first began to shutter schools and businesses and to institute lockdowns in response to the coronavirus pandemic. A year. Back then, it’s important to remember, we were told we’d need to take dramatic steps for a few weeks to “flatten the curve” so that hospitals and intensive care units wouldn’t be overwhelmed by COVID patients.
