Yankees great Jack Chesbro among this year’s Western Mass. Baseball Hall of Fame inductees

Jack Chesbro

A photo from the Conway Historical Society shows Jack Chesbro as a player with the Richmond Giants. It was with Richmond that Chesbro had his break-out year as a pitcher in 1899, going 17-4. That July he was sold to Pittsburgh, where he would pitch for two pennant winners.

He is the only Major League Baseball pitcher in two centuries to win 41 games in a season. He’s also the only pitcher to lose a pennant because of a wild pitch.

That’s a nutshell look at the career of John D. “Jack” Chesbro, a North Adams native who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946. He’s also part of the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021, which will be inducted March 25.
