Arsenal-owned Matteo Guendouzi endures weekend horror show

Arsenal-owned midfielder Matteo Guendouzi endured a torrid cameo appearance on Sunday as Herth Berlin were beaten 3-0 by RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old signed for the Bundesliga outfit during the summer transfer window after falling down the Gunners pecking order.

Some eyebrows were raised when he was allowed to leave, with some feeling Mikel Arteta was missing a trick over the youngster.

The Frenchman hasn’t been seen in an Arsenal shirt since a poor performance during a 2-1 defeat to Brighton last season.

Some fitness issues were cited for his absence but it would seem that Arteta had simply lost patience with the player.

Despite getting some criticism for offloading him, Arteta now looks to have been proven right in his thinking behind the loan move.

Hertha are teetering desperately close to the relegation zone in the Bundesliga; with Guendouzi hardly setting Germany alight.

On Sunday he endured a torrid afternoon which encapsulated just how far the £40,000-a-week performer has fallen.

He was introduced in the 68th minute with the scoreline 1-0 to Julian Nagelsmann’s team.

By the time the full-time whistle sounded, Guendouzi had given the ball away for Leipzig’s second goal and lost his man for the third, capping a miserable evening.

Dire straits

The chances of Guendouzi earning a Gunners reprieve look slim to none – and his spell out on loan won’t have done him any favours.

The likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have enjoyed some decent performances this season, with Thomas Partey still to return from injury.

Offloading Guendouzi could prove problematic and Arsenal might have to try and loan him out again next season.

The man with 11 caps for the France under-21 team must be casting some envious glances towards the Emirates Stadium.

Whilst he is fighting relegation with a very ordinary Berlin team, plenty of youngsters are playing in the first-team at Arsenal.

Some will believe Gunedouzi has time on his side to earn a reprieve in North London but those prospects look slim.

His Bundesliga loan certainly isn’t helping his case right now.
