Like American Express, Discover is both a payment network and a card issuer. While it’s the youngest payment network, it’s also known for having exceptional customer service. In fact, 2023 saw Discover tie with Bank of America on J.D. Power’s credit card customer satisfaction survey, where it has repeatedly been near the top of the list in the past.

Editor's Take

The Discover it® Chrome is a mediocre card with one redeeming feature: the 1-for-1 cash back match, which doubles your rewards at the end of the first year. The high balance transfer fees make the intro APR offer on balance transfers less appealing, and the 2% bonus cash back category is limited to the first $1,000 in quarterly spending in limited categories. All other purchases earn 1%.

Pros & Cons
  • Cash back match means double the rewards at the end of your first year
  • Flexible cash back redemption options
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • High balance transfer fee
  • High cash advance fee
  • 2% cash back category limited to $1,000 in quarterly spending

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: In addition to the rewards and Cashback Match, the Discover it® Student Cash Back offers a 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months, then the standard variable purchase APR of 18.24% - 27.24% applies.

Discover it® Cash Back

[ jump to details ]

Big spenders and those who can maximize the 5% cash-back categories (up to $1,500 per quarter, activation required) with the Discover it® Cash Back can earn sizable rewards, especially in the first year when rewards are doubled.

Rewards: Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places each quarter up to a quarterly maximum of $1,500 in spending when activated. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases – automatically.

Welcome offer: Discover will automatically match all the cash back earned at the end of the first year as a cardmember. There's no minimum spending or maximum rewards.

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: Historically, the Discover it® Cash Back card’s categories have included restaurants, drug stores, grocery stores, gas stations, Amazon and other options generally popular among U.S.-based spenders. The card offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and eligible balance transfers. Then, a standard rate of 17.24% - 28.24% variable applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies.

Discover it® Secured Credit Card

[ jump to details ]

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is one of our top choices for those who need to build their credit history. Cardholders will need to put down a deposit (the amount becomes equal to the cardholder’s credit limit), but it offers what few cards in its class do—the ability to earn decent rewards without an annual fee.

Rewards: Earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Welcome offer: Earn an Unlimited Cashback Match™ - Discover will automatically match all the cash back earned at the end of the first year.

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: Discover will review your account for an upgrade to an unsecured account starting at seven months.

Discover it® Student Chrome

[ jump to details ]

A no-frills cash-back card, the Discover it® Student Chrome offers yet another option for cardholders to earn Discover’s famous unlimited cashback match in their first year and keep the card for the long haul since it has no annual fee.

Rewards: Earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Welcome offer: Earn Unlimited Cashback Match™ - Discover will automatically match all the cash back earned at the end of the first year. There's no minimum spending or maximum rewards.

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: The Discover it® Student Chrome comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months, then a standard variable APR of 18.24% - 27.24% applies, but not a whole lot else other than the ability to pick a design for your card. But it does have free Social Security number alerts and Discover’s Freeze it® feature if your card is misplaced.

Discover it® Miles

[ jump to details ]

Instead of earning traditional cash back, the Discover it® Miles card earns miles. The miles act similar to cash back, where 1 mile is worth 1 cent each.

Rewards: Earn 1.5 miles per dollar of every purchase.

Welcome offer: Unlimited match of all the miles earned at the end of the first year.

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: The Discover it® Miles offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months of account opening. After that, a variable APR of 17.24% - 28.24% applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies. Since it earns miles at a flat rate, this card may be a better choice for cardholders who don’t want to keep track of bonus spending categories or make large purchases in categories that otherwise are not bonused.

Discover it® Chrome

[ jump to details ]

The Discover it® Chrome card will likely only be a good fit for a narrow subset of people: those who frequently take road trips and can’t access a card that offers better rewards on gas spending. It’s not going to earn a ton of cash back, but it may be an option for some.

Rewards: Earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, automatically. Plus earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Welcome offer: Earn Discover will automatically match all the cash back earned at the end of the first year as a cardmember. There's no minimum spending or maximum rewards.

Annual fee: $0

Other benefits and drawbacks: The Discover it® Chrome offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and eligible balance transfers. Then, a standard rate of 17.24% - 28.24% variable applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies.

What You’ll Find on All Discover Credit Cards

Several years ago, Discover unified all of its products under the “Discover it” brand, which is essentially a platform for all its cards. These cards share many of the same features and benefits, including no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees and no penalty fee on your first late payment.

Discover it cards are eligible to receive a Cashback Match at the end of your first year holding the card. This means that at the end of your first year of card membership, Discover will take all eligible points earned and match them, essentially doubling all your rewards.

Other benefits include free access to your FICO® Score, as well as a suite of tools to help prevent fraud and identity theft. You can also use your Discover card to receive cash at checkout from a number of major retailers without incurring cash advance fees or paying a higher interest rate.

Be aware, however, that Discover does not offer many benefits that you might be accustomed to, such as rental car insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage.

What Is the APR for a Discover Credit Card?

The APR for a Discover card will depend both on the specific Discover card you apply for as well as your credit profile. The potential APRs available for each Discover card currently available are the following:

  • Discover it® Secured Credit Card: Best Secured Discover Card: 28.24% variable APR on purchases and balance transfers
  • Discover it® Cash Back: Best for Earning Bonus Cash Back: 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and eligible balance transfers. Then, a standard rate of 17.24% - 28.24% variable applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies
  • Discover it® Student Cash Back: Best Discover Student Card: 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months, then the standard variable purchase APR of 18.24% - 27.24% applies
  • Discover it® Miles: Best Discover Card for Travel: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months of account opening. After that, a variable APR of 17.24% - 28.24% applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies
  • Discover it® Chrome: Best Discover Card for Road Trips: 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and eligible balance transfers. Then, a standard rate of 17.24% - 28.24% variable applies. A balance transfer fee of up to 5% of the amount transferred applies

How To Pick a Discover Credit Card

Finding the best credit card for your needs can feel overwhelming. First, don’t assume each credit card’s basic features or fee structures are the same. For example, some issuer’s cards charge foreign transaction fees, and some don’t. Not all cards offer the same types of rewards or any rewards at all.

Examine your spending before settling on a card that earns rewards to see which card is likely going to return the most when it comes to rewards. If you’re considering applying for a Discover card, first compare additional benefits with cards outside of the Discover network—cards from one issuer often have variations on extra benefits, and another issuer’s lineup may be more appealing to you.

Pro Tip
Discover’s acceptance outside of the U.S. is not as strong as other card networks, so a Discover card is unlikely to be the best choice for frequent international travelers.

How Can I Apply for a Discover Credit Card?

Applying for a Discover credit card is much like applying for any other credit card. Perhaps the simplest way to apply for a Discover card is to visit the company’s website, but prospective cardholders can also call Discover and apply over the phone.

Discover also offers a preapproval tool on its website where potential cardholders can provide personal information and see if they’re likely to receive approval. Pre-qualification will not hurt your credit score, but a pre-qualification does not guarantee approval for a card.

What credit score do you need for a Discover card?

Discover offers cards for people with various credit scores. Those with a good credit score or higher may qualify for the Discover it® Cash Back. However, those with a lower credit score may still qualify for the Discover it® Secured Credit Card or the Discover it® Student Cash Back.

How can I receive approval for a Discover credit card?

There is no guarantee you’ll receive approval for any credit card, but you can take several steps to increase your likelihood of successful application. These might include paying off delinquent accounts or reducing your credit utilization to improve your creditworthiness.

Also, find a card most aligned with realistic expectations for your credit score. If your credit score remains subprime, the greatest rewards cards on the market are likely out of reach, so finding a secured card to help build better credit would likely mean more success.

Find the Best Credit Cards for 2024

No single credit card is the best option for every family, every purchase or every budget. We've picked the best credit cards in a way designed to be the most helpful to the widest variety of readers.

Is a Discover Credit Card Worth It?

Whether a Discover card or another credit card is worth it will depend on your circumstances. Since Discover credit cards tend to have earnings caps on their rewards categories, they can be a good fit for those who plan to charge smaller amounts to their credit card and want to avoid an annual fee. However, high spenders could likely find more value in one of the top rewards cards from a different issuer.

Bottom Line

There are numerous advantages and drawbacks to carrying a Discover card compared to cards from other major issuers. While Discover cards, in general, offer solid rewards, you can often find better options elsewhere. If low fees and excellent customer service are important to you, however, a Discover card may prove to be the best option.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which credit bureau does Discover use?

Though evidence is anecdotal and the bank has not disclosed internal policy on credit checking, Discover appears to use Equifax most often, but also uses Experian or Transunion to pull applicants’ credit. Be sure to check your credit reports with all three major credit bureaus before applying for a new credit card to be sure the issuer pulls a report with error-free, attractive credit.

Which is the best Discover credit card?

Which Discover credit card is right for you is a question only you can answer. Whether you need a credit card that provides certain benefits over others or earns rewards based on specific or all-around spending is among some of the decisions you’ll need to consider while finding the right credit card for you.

Do I need a credit history to apply for a Discover card?

Discover markets specific cards to people with little-to-no credit history or credit in need of repair. Students can consider the Discover it® Student Cash Back, which is geared toward people with short or non-existent credit history. The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is also an option to consider if you have a short credit history or need to improve your credit.

What is the average credit limit on a Discover it Card?

Your credit limit will be determined by Discover when you are approved for a Discover card. Discover, like other issuers, takes several factors into consideration, including your credit history, credit score and income.

What is the minimum payment on a Discover card?

We always recommend paying a card in full each billing cycle. Discover, like other card issuers, requires a minimum payment of either a flat amount or a percentage of your card balance. Any past-due amount will be added to your minimum payment.

How do I cancel a Discover credit card?

Closing a Discover card is as simple as paying off the balance completely and calling the number on the back of the card to cancel the account. You may also want to use any remaining rewards and notify authorized users you’re closing the account. After you’ve called and canceled the account, Discover recommends destroying the card.

Before you cancel a credit card account, ensure you’re doing so thoughtfully. Closing a credit account often impacts your credit in several ways. If your Discover card is the oldest active account you have or its credit limit makes up a significant portion of your overall available credit, you may want to reevaluate.

The Forbes Advisor editorial team is independent and objective. To help support our reporting work, and to continue our ability to provide this content for free to our readers, we receive compensation from the companies that advertise on the Forbes Advisor site. This compensation comes from two main sources. First, we provide paid placements to advertisers to present their offers. The compensation we receive for those placements affects how and where advertisers’ offers appear on the site. This site does not include all companies or products available within the market. Second, we also include links to advertisers’ offers in some of our articles; these “affiliate links” may generate income for our site when you click on them. The compensation we receive from advertisers does not influence the recommendations or advice our editorial team provides in our articles or otherwise impact any of the editorial content on Forbes Advisor. While we work hard to provide accurate and up to date information that we think you will find relevant, Forbes Advisor does not and cannot guarantee that any information provided is complete and makes no representations or warranties in connection thereto, nor to the accuracy or applicability thereof.
