Rangers have found goals hard to come by in recent weeks, with just four in their last four outings.

That’s the same record as Mostafa Mohamed has at his new club, and he was linked with the Ibrox club last year.

According to Record Sport, Egyptian club Zamalek SC demanded £3m for the forward in the January 2020 transfer window, and the Ibrox side eventually signed Florian Kamberi from Hibs.

Mohamed, who has four caps for Egypt’s national side, joined Galatasaray on loan at the end of January 2021’s window, and has made a superb start to life in Turkey.

The 23-year-old has found the net in each of his first four appearances for Fatih Terim’s side, most notably the only goal away from home against Fenerbahce.

He continued his streak on Sunday with a last-minute winner from the spot against Kasımpaşa S.K.

Mohamed has joined the Super Lig leaders on a one-and-a-half-year loan deal for £1.7m, with the Turkish club having an option to buy for £3.5m.

As quoted by Record Sport in April 2020, his former boss Milutin Sredojevic claims to have received a call from Rangers manager Steven Gerrard regarding the player.

He said: “Steven Gerrard called me personally to ask about Mostafa Mohamed. He wanted to know what he was like as a player and at training.

“But Zamalek made it very difficult for the transfer to go through because they don’t want to looked at as a selling club.

“So the transfer never happened, but Steven Gerrard was very keen indeed for the move to go through.

“Mostafa is a player with a bright future. He is an incredible talent who will of course go to Europe one day soon.”
