SIU researchers: Downstate split from Chicago would spell 'economic disaster'

A study by researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, looking at state revenue and spending, shows downstate Illinois residents would not benefit economically from separating from Chicago to form a new state.

For downstate Illinois residents who want to break away from Chicago and the suburbs and form their own state, two Southern Illinois University Carbondale researchers have an emphatic caution:

Don't do it.
