Austin Peay State University is loaning MiFi tablets and laptops to students without computers and who are without internet access.

APSU has moved all in-person spring and summer classes to online only due to the coronavirus outbreak, and wants to ensure students with access to finish out the school year.

Montgomery County has seen two deaths from COVID-19. According to the Tennessee Department of Health's latest data, there were 65 confirmed cases in the county as of Tuesday.

An APSU student works on her laptop prior to classes going all online.

The wireless routers act as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and will be no cost to APSU students. The loaned tablets are limited and the school will start off by providing 20 tablets.

Students with no access, or who may live in a rural area with limited access, can check out a tablet at the University’s Woodward Library lobby, according to a news release.

Woodward's' lobby is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. General access to the library, except for the front lobby, is closed for the remainder of the spring semester.

As of April 7, one student and staff member at APSU both tested positive for COVID-19 and students are asked to practice social distancing in the library.

"The University’s MiFi tablets now provide a way for students to continue their studies at APSU," the release said.

If a student lives more than 60 miles from campus or is unable to come to the library, they can request a router via mail by calling 931-221-7582.

Laptop loaner program

APSU also has a laptop loan program to provide students without computer access on a first come, first served basis. A limited number of computers are still available, according to the release. To request a laptop, current students should visit the Distance Education services on APSU's website.

Router and computer loans expire at the end of the spring semester. If a student also has summer classes, they can extend their loan.

Students must have an APSU student ID, a valid driver’s license, a state-issued ID card or a passport to participate, according to the release.  Students will be notified when their laptop is available for pickup at the library via email.
