Karl Robinson has confirmed Oxford United will make a move for Marcus Browne should the Middlesbrough forward become available for loan.

The U's boss says Oxford will 'bang the drum as loud as anyone' in order to see a return to the Kassam Stadium for the 22-year-old who has had two loan spells there in the last two seasons.

Boro boss Neil Warnock revealed to BBC Tees last week that he was contemplating allowing Browne out on loan.

The forward impressed in pre-season and netted his first goal for Boro after coming off the bench against Bournemouth last month. But that 21-minute cameo was his only league appearance thus far, with Patrick Roberts' arrival expected to push him further down the pecking order.

Boro don't play with wingers, but Browne's versatility means he could fit in the number ten role or as a second striker, but Warnock is left with the dilemma of whether it would be better to let him go out and play and develop, over providing cover for his own wafer-thin squad.

Asked if he would have him back at Oxford if he does become available, Robinson told the Oxford Mail: "We’ll bang the drum as loud as anybody if he’s available.

“If he’s wanted by Neil and Middlesbrough, Marcus is a wonderful player and I’d never get in the way of his development at a higher level.

“But if he becomes available, I’d like to think that we’d be a very strong choice for him.

“I think he could be one of the final pieces in this jigsaw moving forward.”

Boro and Warnock do have until October 16 to decide what to do with Browne in the short-term - with Warnock insistent that a temporary exit wouldn't change his long-term future at the Riverside.

If they do allow him out on loan, Oxford are likely to be one of numerous League One clubs interested in his services. The choice for Boro will be whether to send him to Oxford where he's comfortable and will be looked after well, or whether to send him elsewhere for a change of scenery and a fresh challenge.
