Arsenal fans begged Houssem Aouar to join Mikel Arteta's side after he fired Lyon to victory which kept their title challenge on track.

Aouar scored the only goal as his side beat Rennes on Wednesday to stay third in Ligue 1, three points behind leaders Lille.

The attacking midfielder was a target for the Gunners last summer with Arteta desperate to add more creativity to his midfield.

But Lyon stood firm over their £55million price tag, pricing Arsenal out of a move.

After his heroics on Wednesday night, Aouar took to Twitter to post pictures of himself and his team-mates celebrating.

And his tweet was hijacked by Gunners fans eager for the 22-year-old to switch the Emirates.

"Come to Arsenal," read one response to his tweet, while another said: "Imagine a midfield trio of you, Partey and Ødegaard. We’ll go unbeaten again. Come to Arsenal king."

Another tweet simply read: "Aouar to Arsenal" in capital letters - repeated 15 times.

Gunners fans are clearly keen to Arteta to sign Aouar, who played a key role in Lyon's run to the Champions League semi-finals last season when they knocked out Manchester City.

So far this season he has scored six goals and notched three assists for Lyon in all competitions.

While Arteta strengthened Arsenal's midfield with the signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid in October, he did not address the creativity gap in the transfer window.

His 10th-placed side have scored less goals than any other team in the top half of the Premier League table, and could look to pursue Aouar again in the summer.

It could depend on how Martin Odegaard's loan works out, with the 22-year-old having joined in January on a temporary move from Real Madrid.

So far Odegaard has been involved in wins over Leeds, Leicester and Benfica, as well as defeats to City and Aston Villa.

He will hope for his next chance to impress Arteta when Arsenal travel to face Burnley on Saturday.
