The wife of a suspected ISIS terrorist took out payday loans to fund his purchases of bomb-making equipment on eBay, a court heard.

Sana Ahmed Khan, 24, is accused of financing Mohammed Rehman, 25, as he allegedly plotted to attack London in the months leading up to the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 attacks.

Khan and Rehman deny preparation for terrorist acts, and Rehman also denies possession of articles for terrorist purposes.

Prosecutors claim Rehman was less than two days away from being able to construct a fertiliser bomb similar to those used in the 2005 suicide bombings.

He was arrested in May this year, two months after asking for advice on Twitter on whether to target a Westfield shopping centre or the London Underground.

Jurors at the Old Bailey were told how Khan received three payday loans totalling £700 from QuickQuid on November 17 last year.

She transferred £291 to Rehman followed by another £250 to bring his account out of overdraft.

At 8.52pm that day Rehman set up a Paypal account before making a series of purchases on eBay from 10.57pm.

His buys on the internet auction site included:

  • A heatproof glass funnel for £3.99
  • Lab filter paper for £3.95
  • One litre of Acetone for £6.99
  • Twenty instant ice packs for £10.50
  • One litre of hydrochloric acid for £11.99
  • One litre of hydrogen peroxide
  • Three glass stirring rods
  • 1kg of aluminium powder
  • A glass pipette
  • A measuring cylinder
  • Two measuring beakers

Jurors were also shown records of Rehman using his brother's phone to text Khan to say: 'Sweety call me'.

During the phone call Rehman continued to purchase equipment on eBay from 11.25pm, the court heard, including:

  • A stirring thermometer
  • A RadioShack pickup wire
  • Tornado Nitro RC Fuel
  • Five plastic batter snap on connectors
  • A two litre plastic food container with airtight lid
  • Four Duracell 9V industrial batteries
  • A soldering iron kit
  • 100 clear medical examination gloves
  • An electric hot plate.
  • A Christmas decoration containing 200 fairy lights for £9.99

Jurors were also read loving messages between the couple, who got married in an Islamic wedding ceremony on October 31, 2013 without telling Khan's parents.

On the first anniversary in 2014 Rehman messaged his wife to say: "Happy anniversary my angel :( "

Khan replied: "Happy anniversary my beautiful, I can't believe it's been a year."

Rehman later told her: "My darling you mean the world to me, you are my everything after Allah."

In early November he sent another message asking her for more money "so I can get some weed".

Khan replied: "My love I will transfer to you".

Khan, who has a degree in English at the University of Greenwich in southeast London, allegedly shared his interest in violent Islamic extremism.

It is claimed Rehman tested explosives in his back garden in Reading on at least two occasions and sent a video of the practice detonation to Khan.

Following Rehman's arrest police found nearly 11kg of fertiliser Urea Nitrate, handwritten recipes for the explosives RDX, ETN and Ammonium Nitrate, and the Al Qaeda bomb-making guide 'Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom.'

The prosecution claim the couple developed an interest in the Islamic State and that Rehman 'undoubtedly approved of the atrocities and wished to play his own part'.

Rehman, from Radstock Road, Reading, and Sana Ahmed Khan, from Hutton Close, Earley, Wokingham, deny preparation for terrorist acts.

Rehman denies a second charge of possession of articles for terrorist purposes.

The trial continues.
